Water privatization in Guayaquil began with the signing of a concession agreement in Guayaquil, the largest city and economic capital of Ecuador. There has been no other case of water privatization in the country. In Guayaquil, the service was transferred to the private company Interagua under a concession in 2001. At the same time, the former municipal utility ECAPAG became the regulatory agency for the new private utility.[1]
